a5c7b9f00b The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation. In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage–eventheir former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought–the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen. In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed. When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity -they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth. It'ssimpleit gets.

Battlestar Galactica is just a bad show.

It fails in what it is trying to do. And it fails on its own terms.

The fact that it's a remake makes it all the more annoying because they had a model to emulate and, possibly, do better. But Ron Moore and his team decided to re-invent the wheel.

It turns out they're not that good at re-inventing.

I think a lot of the trouble that befell Galactica came from the fateful decision to shoot on video.

Once that decision was made, the shaking of the camera and the dreadful, dull look of the show were corollariesyou have to spend a lot more time to light video if you want it to look halfgoodfilm.

That still doesn't excuse the pretentious scripts and the bad young models cast where actors were necessary.

In short, the new Battlestar Galactica has been a dreadfully bad show that has been an albatross around the neck of SciFi Channel. …and I'm not exaggerating. I actually liked the first seasons A LOT: good sci-fi, with a good story, pretty decent CG, characters with a real personality and depth (maybe even too much for a sci-fi). You were actually eager to see what was going to happen next to those bereaved and continuously besieged people, and empathized with them. The only negative aspect I could really find there, was the sheer obnoxiousness of some of those characters, suchStarbuck, 'madam President' and Adama jr. 3 main characters, I know, but the overall value of the show was such that I would have nonetheless scored it a 8.5 or even 9 if it kept goingit started 'till the end. Sadly, episodes passed, the story reached a point where metaphysical/religious drivel actually superseded the sci-fi component (in an appalling way). The last episode of season 4 is just the epitome of this absurd (and catastrophic) transformation, and it actually left me wondering about what the (hell) writers/director were thinking when the decided to steer that way. OK, when you watch some horror/sci-fi and whatnot, you're supposed to 'go with the flow' and apply a generous amount of suspension of disbelief in order to accept what's going on and enjoy it, but what happens in the second half (something less) of this show goes well beyond that, and much of it just remains totally unexplained and makes no sense at all, whatever angle you decide to look at it from. So, from a merely numerical approach, if I scored the first part a 9, I'd say the other deserves a 3, so in the end you get a 6, but it's more like we're talking about two separate series… However, if you decide to watch this, you may do yourself a favor and stop watchingsoonyou start asking yourself why everyone has suddenly gone 'batshit' crazy, turning a good sci-fi series into a lame Z-grade BS* driven psychodrama. That way you'll most certainly enjoy the show and remember BSGa good sci-fi series (as it should have, and could easily have been).

*Maybe that's what BSG really stands for…

RIP
